Ecology
Expert ecological services for sustainable development.
Overview
At ORS, we offer a comprehensive range of ecological services to support sustainable development. Our expertise spans habitat mapping, biodiversity surveys, invasive species management, and detailed assessments for species under legal protection.
Whether as standalone services or integrated into larger studies like EcIA or EIAR, we provide critical insights to guide planning and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
With specialists in bird surveys, freshwater and terrestrial ecology, bats, marine mammals, and benthic analysis, we are ready to deploy at a moment’s notice to help you navigate the complexities of environmental sustainability.
ECOLOGY SERVICES
Expert ecology services to protect nature and support sustainable development.
Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA)
We carry out Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) to evaluate the potential impacts of proposed developments on the site and the surrounding environment. Our assessments cover habitats, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invasive species, providing valuable insights to support the planning process and ensure sustainable development.
Appropriate Assessment Screening (AA)
The Appropriate Assessment Screening (Stage 1) is the first step in determining the potential impacts on any protected sites within the zone of influence of a proposed project or plan. This is now a mandatory requirement for all planning applications. If mitigation is needed, we proceed to Stage 2 (NIS).
Natura Impact Statement (NIS)
A Natura Impact Statement (NIS) is the second stage in the Appropriate Assessment process. If the AA Screening identifies the need for site-specific mitigation measures, the NIS outlines the necessary actions to address these requirements for your plan or project.
Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR)
For larger projects requiring an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIAR), we offer expertise in biodiversity chapters that contribute to the overall assessment. With in-house specialists across multiple disciplines, we deliver comprehensive surveys and reports, particularly in the environmental and ecology fields, where cross-team collaboration and project management are key.
Preliminary Ecological Assessment Report (PEA/PEAR)
A Preliminary Ecological Assessment (PEA), often accompanied by a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal Report (PEAR), serves as a quick assessment tool to identify potential ecological concerns early in the pre-planning and design stages. The survey can vary in scope and may or may not include a report, offering valuable insight into what additional studies may be needed for your proposed site.
Habitat Surveys and Mapping
We offer habitat mapping and surveys using FOSSITTS classifications to create a detailed map of the habitats present at your proposed site. This includes full species identification for everything found, presented with visual representations, and can be valuable when planning the layout of your project.
Protected Species Surveys
We conduct surveys to assess habitats and species identified on or near your proposed site, especially those that may require further investigation due to higher levels of legal protection, such as otters, badgers, and certain bird species.
Invasive species surveys and management plans
As a standalone service or as part of a wider study, such as EcIA or EIAR, we conduct invasive species surveys. Where invasive species are identified, we provide a management plan for their removal or avoidance in accordance with industry guidelines. This is crucial to prevent the spread of invasive species.
Specialist Surveys
Our team has expertise in bird surveys, freshwater and terrestrial ecology, bats, and marine operations for Marine Mammal Observers. We also specialise in benthic analysis. With such a wide range of specialisms, we are ready to deploy our experts at a moment’s notice.
Sustainability
We offer up-to-date building sustainability certification for compliance. This will become increasingly important as reports like BNG, BREEAM, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) gain prominence.
