Bus Stop Infrastructure

Overview of service

Meath County Council and the National Transport Authority are long-standing clients of ORS. Working in collaboration with both government bodies, the ORS Infrastructure Team was commissioned to design and construct bus shelters at a number of existing bus stop locations throughout County Meath.

The work included designing and constructing wheelchair-accessible bus stops with the capability of serving high-floored coaches.

As part of the project, the provision of additional bus stops infrastructures such as dropped kerbs, lighting, footpath and cycle lane works, ducting, road markings and signage, including traffic management, was required.

The ORS team identified the need for solid design and background information to support the delivery of the works. The team was responsible for preparing and managing site investigations works packages which fed into the overall designs of each stop.

The team was also responsible for developing the complete design package to inform the construction of the bus stops. This involved the preparation of detailed design drawings, specifications, tender documentation, tender assessment, site supervision and contract administration for the construction of the works.

Response to design requirements

One of the main challenges associated with this project was the fact that the proposed shelters and wheelchair-accessible upgrades were to be designed around existing infrastructure already on the ground.

The ORS team visited over 25 sites initially to ensure the designs considered the existing site conditions, including current services, infrastructure, street furniture, landscaping, private access and boundaries. This approach ensured that the team proposed designs that were achievable on-site while also ensuring they met appropriate design standards and were fit for purpose for all vulnerable user groups.

The team worked closely with Meath County Council and the National Transport Authority to develop a suite of design drawings in accordance with the Design Manual for Urban Streets and new active travel measures. The objective was to provide a safer and more pedestrian-friendly environment for users of the various bus stops.
