Junction Safety Improvement, Pavement Design and PSDP

Overview of service

ORS provided Junction Safety Improvement Design, Pavement Design and Project Supervisor Design Stage (PSDP) services from feasibility stage to tender.

When completed the junction will have improved sightlines, high friction surfacing on the R184, improved road signage with interactive solar powered speed signs, rationalising of entrances to private properties, footpaths, landscaping, and surface water drainage. We acted as the design consultants up to the construction stage for the project.

Project Outcome

The project successfully delivered a comprehensive solution to improve road safety at a critical junction. After evaluating multiple safety enhancement strategies, the chosen approach included high-friction surfacing, road width reductions, new road markings, interactive speed signage, and upgraded public lighting. Engaging with landowners early in the process allowed for agreements on necessary accommodation works, such as improved visibility and enhanced drainage to prevent surface water ponding and ice formation.

This proactive approach ensured efficient project execution and minimised potential delays. ORS meticulously prepared detailed design drawings and specifications in line with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) standards, covering all aspects from site clearance and drainage to pavements, kerbing, and landscaping. The project was tendered under the Short Public Works Contract (PW-CF6), ensuring cost efficiency and compliance with regulatory standards. ORS’s expertise played a pivotal role in delivering a well-structured, sustainable, and cost-effective solution that met the client’s objectives.

Challenges

The project presented several challenges, particularly in balancing safety improvements with stakeholder requirements and physical site constraints. Engaging with private landowners to secure consent for accommodation works, such as visibility enhancements and drainage improvements, required careful negotiation and coordination with the local authority.

Additionally, the design had to integrate various elements, including road width reductions, footpath installations, and access modifications, while ensuring compliance with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) standards. Budget constraints posed another challenge, requiring a strategic approach to maximise safety improvements without exceeding financial limits. Coordinating with multiple stakeholders, including utility providers, was essential to avoid potential construction delays.

Despite these complexities, ORS successfully navigated the challenges by leveraging its experience in road safety engineering and public works contracts, delivering a solution that met safety, budget, and stakeholder expectations while ensuring a smooth transition from design to implementation.
