Overview of service

ORS delivered ecological consultancy services in support of a proposed anaerobic digestion (AD) biogas facility in County Meath, acting on behalf of the developer throughout the planning and design process.

The project involved the preparation of a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA), followed by a comprehensive programme of seasonal ecological surveys to establish a robust environmental baseline and inform the evolution of the design.

Surveys included bat activity monitoring, wintering bird surveys, and habitat mapping to establish a strong ecological baseline. The findings informed a full Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) and Appropriate Assessment (AA) screening report, ensuring legal compliance and reducing planning risk.

Challenges & Solution

Seasonal Survey Requirements – Ecological surveys required careful timing to align with appropriate survey windows. ORS implemented a structured survey programme to ensure all necessary data was collected efficiently.

Environmental Constraints – The presence of sensitive habitats and species required detailed assessment and a precautionary approach to design and mitigation.

Regulatory Compliance – Ensuring compliance with ecological legislation and planning policy was key. ORS provided guidance throughout to support a smooth planning process.
