Ecological Consultancy

Overview of service

ORS was commissioned by RPS Group, on behalf of Limerick City and County Council, to provide ecological surveys ahead of a major flood relief scheme in and around Limerick City.

The study covered 1,041 hectares across 10 pre-designated locations within a 10km radius of the city, primarily along the River Shannon and its tributaries.

For this large-scale project, ORS delivered a tailored ecological survey strategy, including eDNA sampling for amphibian prescence, terrestrial mammal surveys with a focus on otters and badgers, reptile and amphibian surveys and a dedicated Marine Mammal Risk Assessment (MMRA).

Project Outcome

Ecological inputs were vital in mitigating risks to otters and badgers, species of high conservation concern, particularly in areas impacted by piling and other disruptive works. ORS also conducted an MMRA focused on the Lower River Shannon SAC to assess potential impacts on resident bottlenose dolphins

This integrated approach allowed the team to address terrestrial and marine ecological issues within one framework, ensuring legal compliance, reducing ecological risks, and informing a robust mitigation strategy.

Challenges & Solution

Large Study Area – The scale of the project (over 1,000 hectares across multiple sites) required careful coordination and a structured survey strategy to ensure full coverage and consistency.

Sensitive Species – The presence of protected species, including otters, badgers, and bottlenose dolphins, required detailed assessment and tailored mitigation measures.

Terrestrial and Marine Interfaces – Addressing both terrestrial and marine ecological constraints within a single framework required an integrated and multidisciplinary approach.
