Ecological Consultancy

Overview of service

ORS was appointed to deliver ecological consultancy services to support a planning application for a new data centre.

The EcIA process involved a suite of field surveys to determine the site’s ecological value, including habitat classification, breeding bird surveys, and bat roost assessments.

The site supported a range of bird and mammal species of conservation concern. Crucially, a bat roost was confirmed on site – triggering the requirement for a derogation licence under the Wildlife Acts. ORS managed the license application process and developed a robust mitigation strategy to safeguard protected species. Early ecological input enabled the integration of mitigation measures into the design, allowing the project to progress on schedule.

Project Outcome

ORS delivered a robust Ecological Impact Assessment supported by detailed survey data, enabling a well-informed and compliant planning application.

The successful identification of a bat roost and subsequent management of the derogation licence process ensured that all legal requirements were met. Appropriate mitigation measures were implemented to protect sensitive species and habitats, reducing the risk of delays or enforcement.

This proactive and strategic approach supported the timely progression of the project while maintaining high standards of ecological protection.

Challenges & Solution

Protected Species Constraints – The confirmation of a bat roost introduced additional licensing requirements. ORS managed the derogation licence process and ensured appropriate mitigation was developed and implemented.

Ecological Sensitivity – The presence of species of conservation concern required detailed assessment of potential direct, indirect, and cumulative impacts.
