Overview of service

ORS was engaged to undertake ecological assessments for a large-scale housing project, including a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA), habitat mapping, and Appropriate Assessment (AA) screening.

The site comprised hedgerows, treelines, and semi-natural habitats of moderate ecological value, with potential to support protected species such as bats and nesting birds. Working closely with the design team, ORS identified ecological constraints early and recommended layout modifications to retain key habitat features and buffer zones.

Challenges & Solution

Ecological Constraints – The presence of semi-natural habitats and potential for protected species required early identification and sensitive design responses.

Planning and Compliance – Ensuring alignment with Appropriate Assessment requirements and broader ecological legislation was critical to project progression.

Balancing Development and Biodiversity – Integrating biodiversity enhancements within a large-scale residential layout required close coordination with the design team.
