Overview of service

The Mount Carmel Community Hospital refurbishment in Dublin 14 represents a significant project undertaken by the HSE and Clancy Construction who appointed ORS to provide Civil & Structural (C&S), and Fire Safety services.

The primary aim of this refurbishment was to enhance the hospital’s capacity to provide advanced surgical care, aligning with the HSE’s broader healthcare initiatives.

The ORS Civil & Structural and Fire Safety Team’s comprehensive approach encompassed detailed planning and execution, ensuring that all new installations seamlessly integrated with the existing hospital infrastructure.

Project Outcome

The scope of the refurbishment project at Mount Carmel Community Hospital includes extensive works to modernise and repair various parts of the hospital. The project has been carried out under a fast-track programme, emphasising a Design & Build approach, where design work is conducted concurrently with on-site construction activities. Notably, the refurbishment is being executed while the hospital remains operational at other levels, showcasing ORS’ ability to manage complex projects in active environments.

Our team collaborated closely with the contractor, design teams, and Technical Advisors (TAs) on a daily basis. Regular site visits have been conducted to address and overcome any challenges, as well as adhering to the Building Control Amendment Regulations (BCAR) process requirements.

This project has been carried out as a result of the HSE’s strategic planning to improve and create new surgical hubs, enhancing Ireland’s healthcare infrastructure.

Challenges & Solutions

Several key challenges were encountered during the Mount Carmel Community Hospital refurbishment project. The design required new floor layouts, necessitating the provision of additional floor supports, which presented a significant structural challenge. Additionally, providing supports for the new operating room theatres, specifically for pendants and surgical lights, required precise engineering solutions.

These challenges were successfully overcome through close coordination between the design disciplines and key subcontractors, including the steel subcontractor, M&E subcontractor, and the operating rooms supplier. This collaborative approach ensured that all structural and service requirements were met without compromising on quality or safety.

Notable successes from this project include the accommodation of new services within the existing structures and the provision of robust supports for the operating room systems. These achievements underscore our team’s expertise in handling complex refurbishment projects in the healthcare sector. The successful delivery of this project demonstrates our ability to manage fast-track programmes and Design & Build projects while maintaining high standards of quality and safety in the Healthcare sector.
